Lost a foal last night

One of Sarah's horses was due a foal in a couple of months, but she gave birth last night out in the field. Even if the little 'un was alive when born, it didn't stand much chance with the cold and was found dead this morning  :(

And this follows only a month after she had to have an old horse put down. He was just at the natural end of his life and went down in the field and couldn't get back up.

Not a great time for Sarah.

my friend lost her mare and foal a few months ago.the foal born dead and the mother later put down as her back end was paralysed, it is just so traumatic.
I also have a 45 year old pony ---and dread the day he wont be able to get up!

shame :(...we had a SHETLAND STUD some years back and it was a worrying time waiting...having to find the after birth to see if was ok...all that stuff...what breed was it ?

It's always a fear, I've worked many years in the stunt industry using my own horses, it's always a fear something could go wrong, it's even worse when they die through old age or illness.

At least the mare is fine, the foal barely had a life to loose. It's no consolatation but at least she didn't run into complications during the birth.

I'm sure I say this from all of us who have horses, our thoughts are with her.

Welsh D. Worse still, it was a Palomino.

Sarah used to run a miniature Shetland stud too. What was your stud name? She was Bothwell Castle stud near Glasgow. You might even know each other!!

Frankly, the Shetties were dreadful for still births as I'm sure you understand, so she's used to it really. As Andi says, it seems worse when you loose an older one, even if he was getting to the end of his days. He would have gone years ago if he was still in Scotland. Moving him south gave him a new lease of life with the milder winters.

Ours is DARLEY...,Was into the Welsh Cobs to, still my favourite, watching them at trot at the Royal Welsh with the crowd all screaming and clapping...We breed some good little foals, mostly filly's, had a few colts...I'm not into them much now, its the wife and girls hobby
