Idle problems

Sometimes idle runs at 1500 rpm on both petrol ad gas, sometimes cuts out at idle in Drive, again both petrol and gas but worse on gas. I suspect stepper motor is playing up. Any ideas how to fix it or is it a new/used/recon stepper motor. Rimmers are charging £110 + VAT for a new genuine one!

Hello, does it idle bad when trying to park or at the traffic lights or when your sat in park turning the steering wheel or when you put the lights/heaters/radio on. If so it might be the vacuume advance.

All pipes are ok. Symptoms do seem to be stepper motor related. It can run at 1500 rpm on idle. turn engine off then back on and it will run at 500 rpm. Most of the time it runs perfectly on both petrol and gas although a bit hesitant on petrol when cold.

When starting the ECU will run the engine at 1500 rpm if it sees a low battery voltage, but to keep doing it soiunds more like a fault.

Try cleaning the stepper with WD40

Also you can clear any ECU fault by unplugging it or removing the battery for a second, try that and see if it's better.

It certainly sounds like the stepper to me... Mine was just like that :(

I tried cleaning mine and occasionally it would appear to make a difference, but it never lasted more than a couple of days. In the end I changed it (5 minute job - DON'T over torque it!) and bingo! all is fine now  :dance:

Unfortunately I bought mine for full price (I think around £70 at the time) but have since found that they turn up on eBay for £25 inc del. p.s. Two things I have heard/read that might be BS, but I follow them  just in case when messing with anything injection related are:
  • Never disconnect the ECU, or any sensors, actuators, injectors etc unless you have disconnected the battery first or you may get fault codes and the ECU will then go into limp-home mode
  • That is take 15 seconds with the battery disconnected to re-set any fault codes

Correct, though once a sensor starts to work the ECU will notice.  My LSE always has TSR fault registered but it still runs fine, perhaps it will get more economical if I fix it but somehow I doubt it.
