Directional tyres..

I've been looking at buying a new set of tyres for the 110. I was thilking of Khumo KL71's, but been directional, what do you do for a spare?? is it OK to use for short period in the "wrong" direction..  OR should I stick with BFG M/T's?

as the tyre is being used as a spare therefore only temporary use then yes it is fine to have a directional spare  Lee

Gernerally a directional tyre run the wrong way will be less effective, though as a spare should be fine.

My logic would be to have the spare for the passanger side as you have less visiblity of the obsticles its driving over off road and when on road, most of the debris tends to accumulate at the sides of the roads, whicht eh passanger side is more likely to run over.

Put the best tyre you have now as the spare - it saves the cost of a 5th tyre and is not directional. Not as good on one side but better for the other.

Had been thinking about getting the new Kumhos or maybe the Insa Turbo Sahara's (also directional) but have started to wonder if this will mean that I am sacrificing traction when reversing in offroad conditions? :shock:

i got a set of insa turbo sahara's and first i ran a no rotational AT tyre on, then after a while i got a non rotational MT tyre

 I do know people who run directional tyres correctly at the front, and backwards at the rear  so that they get equal traction forwards or reverse. You lose a bit forwards but gain in reverse.

Hate to say it but if you are involved in an accident with the tyre running at the incorrect direction you insurance could be void

i really rate the hankook dynapros mts they lasting well on mine and not bad on price, but the kl71's tend to come up small, me and my mate got them and there suposed to be the same size but mine are alot bigger.

Ireally fancied the KL71's but it was the directional bit that put me off. I've ran the grenway macho's in the past and they were great especially on wet roads as the pattern tends to push the water out.

But in the end I went with the Copper STT's. about £10 more a tyre but no concerns about directionallity

Just to throw a curve ball into the tyre discussion I can highly recommend Toyo Transpath M/T's, they are quiet on the road and great in the mud.

And bear in mind that Robbie Gordon came third in the 2009 Dakar on these tyres.

Tyre sizing is governed by the ETRTO (European tyre and rim technical organisation) who specify the standard that a tyre must meet to be rated at a certain size. This standard allows for the tyre to fall within a given tollerance range and is the reason two different makes of tyre which are marked as the same size will actually be different sizes.

The tyre manufacturers will only recommend oversizing tyres by 1.5% or under sizing by 2 %  - so most of us are ignoring this recommendation - which in the event of an accident could be used to void your insurance! You pays yer money.............
