the girlfriend just bought 2 russian hamsters.....

i am not to botherd about that but do hamsters actually do anything? there just sitting in the nest box doing [!Expletive Deleted!] all! i saw a gerbal(i think) at the kennel and that thing was mental! it looked like a cross between a squirrel and a rabbit and everey now and then it would wake up and run around its cage and spazz out in its sand bath......our hamsters......nothing!

Ours had us trained,  if he heard me or the missus pottering about he'd run to his food bowl and sit there looking cute till he got a treat.

Other than look cute, wee, run a lot in wheels and do a passable impression of a choose your own buffet lunch for cats they don't do much especially not during the day, they are nocturnal (ish) after all

I have two hamsters called sugar and spice ( one white, other ginger). Get them a wheel and they will drive you mad.
Hamsters tend to come to life at night. Also get them a exercise ball, great fun watching them roll around in them.
Whats even more fun is when somebody accidently kicks one and they spin out of control across the floor. ;)
My old hamster could climb the stairs

the hamster we have now waits until about 2am (on purpose i think) then proceeds to throw stuff round its cage and rattle the bars  from the noise you would think the house is being broken into

From personal experience (a long time ago):

Do not buy a metal cage, or rather one with a metal base. See, hamsters tend to pee in the same place. Over time, this will create a rusty hole. You will not notice the hole (or consider it big enough to be a problem) until you find that your hamster is no longer in his cage.

Mine was eventually found chewing through a box of paper after we took most of the room apart!

When our son had one, we found it rather boring. but if you poke it with a stick a few times you can normally get it moving. 8-[

from what i remember of hamsters is that they stay awake all night spinning around in their wheel between sessions of chewing the cage bars.

I'm amazed that nobody has come up with a way of using hamster wheels to charge batteries. It's hardly cruel so long as the hamster is free to stop and get out of the wheel when it gets tired.

Many many moons ago while I was still living at home my sister had one (well she had a few actually) but this one was a bloody escape artist..!!!!! we lost it once for a couple of days. Anyway, one morning it was found laying on the kitchen floor with half it's face all burnt and only just alive..!!! Long story short.....it had squeesed behind one of the kitchen cupboards and decided to chew through the power cable for Mum's brand new built in dishwasher...!!!!!!! how it survived the electric shock is beyond me...!!!!

But my sister, loving all small creatures paid an arm and a leg at the vets to try and save said hamster including nightime bottle feeds, poor thing lasted 3 weeks before it finally gave up the will to live.....and it wasn't cheap to get the dishwasher repaired either...lol

Personally I'd rather have a cat or a dog...lmao.

Mark.

A mate of mine used to rent a room on a farm and the lad who lived ther assured me that if you threw stones at the lama it would do a funny dance...
