Right - need to change the clutch. No ramp. No crane. On my own. Bloody great. How practical is it to drag the engine forward (rad out 1st!) and change it in the bay?

in your situation i would hire an engine crane it will be a lot easier to lift engine out to do or if you want to do it on floor remove transfer box seperately from main box then lift down box but i would still do it from engine in situ

When i do them on my own i have a trolley jack under the gearbox but use a heavy duty ratchet strap looped over the chassis and under the box just incase it slips off the jack. Then just slide it back enough to change the clutch/fork and slide it back in.I normally put an axle stand under the bellhousing whilst changing the clutch ect. to reduce the risk of it falling off the jack.If at all possible get yourself an extra pair of hands even if it's just while you slide the gearbox in and out which is when the chance of injury is greatest.
Hope this helps and good luck!!

I did mine by borrowing a crane and using it thought the door and holding the box thought the hole for the gear leaver's. The transfer box is very heavy the gear box is just heavy!

doing it on your own, take the engine out,all you need is 3 pieces of scaffolding tube and a chain and block, you can do the majority of the work from up top,and its a bit safer than a gearbox falling on you,jim :D

do mine by dropping the box back , dont even take the crossmember off the box just release from the chassis and drop rear end down enough to clear the h/brake drum .then slide back enough . it is tight but you can do it. iff you take the ctr console out to take the lever out and to disconnect the breather pipes and wires use that hole in the trans tunnel, block of hefty wood and ratchet strap . same sort of procedure as already mentioned . i did actually drop one once and had a heck of a job to get clear of it .. alan...

Did mine with a turfor and some rope throught the sunroof! Was hung off a pretty substantual steel bar. Had a hand to slid the box back into place though.
