Discover Spider Unit
« on: March 29, 2009, 21:10:11 »
Hi, was out doing a spot of laning yesterday, turned the disco engine off to get some pics, once finished went to start her up again and nothing! after a few turns of the key fired up fine Over the last 24 hours it's got worse!

Form reading things on the t'interweb it sounds like the Spider Unit so i set out to get the Spider unit out today and see what state it's in, i followed a very handy guide (below) and stripped all the dash out, what a pain that was!!! Once i got all the dash out nothing but a big gaping hole where the Spider Unit supposedly should be!

Anyone have any ideas if those little tinkers from Land Rover stuck it somewhere else on a 1998 Disco V8 Auto?

The guide i followed http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=86

Another thought is that car doesn't have the standard Land Rover alarm fobs it has another alarm fitted, does a different alarm mean they move and replace the Spider unit?

Chris

Mine killed the disco last year.
Fixed it in my lunch break

Have you got a 2 button factory alarm?

No it's not a two button factory alarm it's possible an after market alarm not sure, thats why i was wondering if when this different alarm was fitted whether they would do away with or relocate the Spider Unit

i would test out this idea first. get a piece of wire and put it direct from the positive terminal on the battery and then to the stop solonoid. if it starts first time then the alarm is the problem.

Do petrols have stop solonoids though?  :-k

In my disco my alarm broke after an engine change and I now have a secret switch to turn the stop solonoid on and off. I took it to a land rover specialist to get the alarm sorted but they said what I had done is just as good, if not better then the alarm unit. The alarm still goes off if a door is opened though.

Most expensive item for a Disco is????? a round piece of paper stuck on the windscreen!
