Starting Problem

Hi,

I have a 3.9 V8i Disco 1, we were out today just to blow a few cobwebs off it.  After about 10 minutes of driving we stopped at traffic lights, a few moments later the engine cut out.  My first thought was that it had changed over to gas too soon and turned the key to start it.  Nothing happened, no noise, no lights.  So I stuck on the hazard lights apologised to the growing line of traffic behind and tried again 8 or 9 times and nothing.  Then it turned over started briefly and cut out again.  Once again turning the key produced no effects for a few times, then it started and for the rest of the day has been behaving perfectly.  It's as if the immobiliser was cutting in.

Anyone have an idea could have caused this?  And is it easy to fix?

sounds like your alarm spider, try a forum search or a google search you will find loads of info on this common problem.

cheers Ady.  Am not sure if it is that as mine's a '94 model although the symptoms sound right, and looks like a right [!Expletive Deleted!] to fix too!

Had similar problem with my Rangie, it turned out to be the inertia switch for accident cut out, fit new switch or bypass it for fault diagnosis.

honestly I've no idea Jimmy.  It's been good as gold again today.  Am using it for towing the van to Devon for Easter weekend so hope it behaves itself!

Might be an idea to get it sorted - last place you want it to cut out is while towing a caravan at 60mph on the motorway...

If it is the alarm spider then it's not too bad a job. You just need to work methodically and keep track of all the screws. Mine took about half an hour to do.

You can apparently resolder the dry joints in the spider unit, but knowing my luck if I did that then another couple of joints would go bad as soon as I'd finished reassembling the dashboard!  :lol:

and I would have thought if an auto box looses engine power at 60mph it wont do it any favours. Just my thought. And dont slam it into P if it does!!!

Do you mean when you turned the key to the on position there was no ignition lights ? If so then check your battery terminals are tight and the earths are ok

no, meant there were no lights on the dash.

I've ran it every day since and it's been fine, starting first time.  Thanks for the advice fellas I'll report back with any news.
