I’ve welded my Bumper & A Bar combo and fitted/wired the Lightforce Spotlights.

Several months ago I asked this question. Many thanks for all of the replies.

Since then, I’ve welded my Bumper & A Bar combination and fitted/wired the Lightforce Spotlights too.

See what you think…….













I still need to make modified spotlight brackets as they are spaced out by a couple of large nuts! Also, I need to straighten the OS recovery point, refit the headlight washers and weld in the Hi Lift jacking tubes kindly supplied by Boss and Wizard.

For good measure I've added a couple of LED driving lights behind the grille. They come on with the ignition an go out when the sidelights come on.

I'm taking it thats a deafener 'with air-con' A bar with the feet cut off and welded on?  If so I know what I'm buying next to go on my GD4x4 bumper..........

It's like this...

Bits I used...
Devon 4x4 Bumper - Ebay - £265
Defender/Series A Bar (plus blue spotlights) - Ebay - £35 (Sold spotlights for £16)
Lightforce 240 Blitz Spotlights - Devon 4x4 - £230
Lightforce Security Nuts (4) - Devon 4x4 - £20ish

Tools/equipment I used...
Welder
Angle grinder
Tape Measure
Files
Sockets - to remove/replace bumper, etc.
Hammerite - Satin

The job went like this...

Spent weeks looking at the bits and thinking the job through - very important! It was obvious that the A Bar would not fit with its feet still on so chopped the feet off. I then propped it on the Disco with the help of a few bungees. See below.


Then I kept cutting until I got it to the correct height/angle. Cleaned both parts. Tack welded. Refitted the bumper and spots to double  check. Removed it. Welded, dressed and painted it. Refitted it and wired in the spots. See below.


A job like this can be done on any substantial bumper - not a standard one as it's too thin.

Watch out for "lowline" bumpers as there won't be enough room to mount the A Bar. The D44 has just about enough room to weld. The A Bar touches the grille at the back and the weld at the front is right on the front edge of the bumper. See below.


Can it be done by a novice - a lot of it can but you might need to make friends with you local welder.

Mine is just a standard Defender 90/110 A bar welded to a Paidia winch bumper just need to get the angle and height of the cut right.

It was sold to me as a Series A Bar. My parents (who live in Stoke on Trent) picked it up from a guy in Liverpool so I never had a chance to confirm that.

just to say that has to be the nice disco i have seen, and it looks soo good clean. i would be scared to take it offroad too nice.

It's a geniune LR "Gulf State" or "Saudi" grille. They crop up on ebay between £40 and a whopping £200.

Weird. I had strongly considered a bonnet pod but opted for my current set up.
