sounds like the head gaskget.... mine did this for the last 2 mornings......

i took it into conqueror4x4 who did a sniff test on it and found it was leaking.....

they did the head gaskget today for me and now i am back on the road ...

if its kicking it back through the tank i would go with it... get it tested for sure.

right would this also give me no heaters and no water in the pipes going to heaters
water pressure coming out of the return on the thurmastat but in coughs in and spluts
and the same  on the rad one too
this is making me think its just the water pump not pumping but im not sure how to check

I would expect the heater to stop working if the head gasket went, certainly on my old Citroen that was the case.

Were it not for the other symptoms I'd suggest a problem with the seal on the header tank cap, I had that after replacing the tank last year (original split). However, with the other problems this sounds like the gasket.

Whilst I tend to agree with the head gasket diagnosis of others there is another possibility - a blocked radiator - either internally blocked or the exterior full of mud/leaves.

I recently had an overheating problem with the V8 that gave similar symptoms to those you describe and a replacement rad cured it :-)

I'd get it sniff tested before lifting the head.

A classic head gasket failure would cause the water to "spit" out in lumps whilst the engine idled.
