Maverick/Terrano
« on: June 14, 2009, 08:02:14 »
What exactly are the differences (if any) - which seems to last longer, and what problems crop up on them?
Hubbys knees have finally given up the ghost and 'normal' cars are too low for him,  so we need a comfortable 5/7 seater - fairly economical ( high 20's to mid 30's) auto preferred..and the maverick /terano seems to fit the bill.. Would love another Disco - but we dont have the space to repair the sills (as everyone we have seen needs them doing!!)
also the maverick seem s to be getting seriously cheap at the moment. will they run on bio? or wont the pumps accept it?
cheers

having had a mav i would suggest that you keep looking for a clean disco. mav's and terranos seem to rot badly in inaccessible places add to that high parts prices and the fact that they can't match a tdi's fuel economy. don't get me wrong they are very capable both on and off road but my disco just seems to make less fuss of the terrain.

But you did have a very early petrol model Lambert, and they are thirsty.

The TDi models (look for bonnet scoop for intercooler) give much better MPG and run happily on Bio - I use 100% at this time of year and 75% during the winter. Similar performance to a disco TD5 for way less money.

As you say they are seriously cheap at the moment.

The only real differences between Maverick and Terrano are bits of trim and the badges. All were assembled by Nissan in Spain and use the same running gear. You will come across Mistrals too which are Grey import Jap built ones, better trim levels still etc but higher prices.

Look for rusty cills especially on SWB models. Rusty seat belt mount points (in rear arches), early models had weaker gearbox so listen for noise if buying an early one. TBH theres not a lot else, in a good few years of ownership I have replaces, 1 starter and alternator (done a lot of wading though) and a steering idler at about £20. Other than that its been service items or modifications. Sure parts are a bit more than landrover parts but you don't need them that often and there is a good market in 2nd hand bits.

Well what a waste of 140 miles and 4 hours that was!!!
rear chassis was paper thin - and the engine made Ivor the engine look good - blowing oil from filler and dip stick, also had a diesel leak from the pump .. think some peoples version Of "Very Good Condition" needs to be checked!!
Oh well the search goes on!
