Brakes sqealing constantly
« on: June 25, 2009, 10:47:20 »
Morning all, hopefully one you can help.

I have just put new pads on the front of my 95 300tdi as the last ones were squealing constantly when they heated up and were getting a bit worn.

Anyways...I replaced the pads (Mintex) and used new pins and new retaining springs. Took for a drive and they smell like burning rubber when i apply the brakes. I am presuming they may have a coating of some sort on them that will eventually burn off?

Drove into work this morning, and after a short blast down the motorway they have started squealing again :'(

Any idea's ????  (both the squealing and smell)

Cheers

Rgds Brad

I know some brake pads are designed to drag for the first few miles, it supposedly conditions the disks. Not sure about the validity of this idea but the EBC Green Stuff ones I put on the front of mine were definitely hot and dragging for about the first 20 miles or so, then settled down. This doesn't help with the squealing though.  :-k

Yes they were Mintex pads...not sure what the original pads were though (they were squealing too)

With some mintex pads in the Discovery they can slip forwards in the caliper allowing them to rub and squeel!

Take them back out and grind the leading edge off, that should cure it. You did of course put some copper slip on the back of them as well?

I was about to buy some new Mintex pads but now I'm not so sure! What do you suggest are the best ones to get?

I always use Lockheed, have done for years.

It is the pads isn't it not a bearing, I only ask cos you say it was doing it before the new pads were fitted?

Think its sorted  I removed them again last night...cleaned all the crap from the calipers and made sure there was plenty of clearance between the disk and the metal shroud  (which was also covoured in crud).
Used an  angle grinder to smooth the front edge of the pad. Smeared copper slip on the back of the pads and round the pistons.
Put it all back together, and hey presto no more squeal. There is still a bit of a smell when I use the brake, but its nowhere near as bad...which makes me think they are coated with something thats slowly being burnt off.
Its raining this morning, so they may have an effect on the squeal, but fingers crossed the problem may be solved.
Thanks all for your advice
