Take the pipe off the servo from the vacuum pump, and put your finger across it; it should have very good suction even on tickover, if it hasnt then good possibility you need a new pump.

Check for cracks around the servo.

Had the hard pedal, it ended up that my pump & the servo were U/s

Run the engine, the servos should be helping the braking.  Turn engine off, servo should still give you about 5 pumps of assistance, then the pedal goes hard.

If it doesn't then the non-return valve on the servos might be goosed.

If the assistyance is coming and going then you need to check that pump, funny noises don't sound good.

ok took the pipe from the pump to servo off and ran engine very little suction at pipe so i would say pump knackered, will replace the pump ,remember readin some whare that the pumps can get a bit tappity when they are worn,so hopefully a new one will quiten things down in the engine bay
cheers gus
