Holidays or not, I certainly wouldn't want to be a teacher - I just don't have the patience with kids.

Good luck to those who can teach.  ;)

My wife is a teacher, and I wouldn't swap my job for hers, even though she does (and always will) earn more than me, and gets 12 weeks holiday a year...

You'll get none of that from this quarter, our 4 year old starts school on Monday, and not a day too soon.  I don't think I could cope spending my days in a room with 30 of him, ones bad enough!

Eight weeks ... do you work in an independent school?  I work in a boarding school, we broke up first week in July and the kids start back on Monday.

I'm a secretary there - I get 4 weeks' holiday plus bank holidays, to be taken during school holidays, ie at the expensive time.

The teachers there put in some hard work and long hours - not only do the full-time teachers do a full 35 lesson week (including Saturdays), they also coach sports (practices 3 times a week and matches on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, home and away fixtures), other extra-curricular activities, and have to do evening duties at least once a week until 11.00 pm then still be in registration at 8.30 the following morning.  They certainly work extremely hard and I don't begrudge them a minute of their holiday.
