Is it legal to weld extra supporting bars onto your chassis?
« on: September 07, 2009, 18:42:14 »
Hi all, I'm making up a detachable lowered tow bar to my lightweight so it hangs nice and low to tow but can quickly unbolt for mud-fun, and my plan involves welding a square tube between the chassis rails about a foot back from the rear crossmember to attach support bars from the towball mount.
Just thought id check legality before welding to my chassis!
Cheers

yes it is fine to weld as it is only a support bar for the Towbar, so it shouldnt have any problem for the MOT

You are not allowed to weld anything to a chassis in Germany, it hasn't got here yet.  One day though......

Scary German law there!

That's nothing...:
  • Can't mow lawn or use power tools on Sunday
  • Can't hang washing out on Sunday
  • Got to clear snow from pavement outside your house... or get fined/sued!
  • Get looked at funny if you don't wait for the green man... pick up a fine if the polizei catch you... jaywalking
  • etc...etc...etc...!

Still... I'd live there in a heartbeat if I could find work with my limited language skills!

I thought there was issues these days making ANY modification to chassis (other than repairing to original design) - requiring a test or at least confirmation that it doesn't need a test, sva/iva or what ever they call it now.

thats only if the chassis has been shortened or extended between the wheel base or you have more than so many points on the DVLA scoring system

But that would make bobtailing legal without an SVA then?
