LT230 input gear preloading

I am soon to swap my defender transfer box for a disco one. The disco box needs the input gear changing for the crossdrilled type as it is worn old type.

...but...
I am confused how to check and set the preloading whilst the gearbox/mainshaft is still on the truck as the destructions say to move the mainshaft back and forth and measure on a dialgauge to calculate shim required.

5. Position suitable DTI with stylus of gauge contacting end of mainshaft, push mainshaft rearwards and zero gauge.
6. Push mainshaft forwards and note gauge reading.

How the hell...?

It's the only bit of job I am worried about  :?

Surely it's the input gear end float you are measuring, not the mainshaft? It's about a year since I did mine, so I'm struggling to remember how I did it!

You should take a very carefull look at the gearbox output shaft too. On mine, both the shaft and the transfer box input gear were totally shot.

*shrug* I thought that's what I was supposed to be doing, maybe the workshop manual has a typo and says shaft instead of bearing, it's bugging me.

Yeah, the tranny on the defender at the moment, I had a looksee today and phew... it's a cross drilled bearing and the shaft is as virginal as can be... big feeling of relief when I saw that. The worn gear I mentioned was from the disco tranny, which is box that I am going to fit on my defender. I wouldn't have liked to have been the owner of the disco the box came off that's for sure. If I'd had known I wouldn't have bothered ordering a new bearing as the one from the defender is exactly same 26 teeth, 129mm length cross drilled jobby that I am ordering.

Have re-read and I am now confident it really means move the input gear back and forth to measure the float and do the calculation as per manual. I will do that while the tranny is off the truck. The shim that's is in there at moment is the 3.15mm thinnest one so that's a good start, if I need a different shim size I will order it at same time as the oil seal.

so guys... what do you do if there is no end float (turns nice and freely though) and it's got already got thinnest shim in and is a model that not supposed to have a gasket fitted?

Okay I have found alternative method in a different version on the LT230 overhual manual to check the preload on the input gear using a spring scale, as long as it's a load-to-turn of 2.26 kg to 9 kg (5 lb. to 20 lb.)  then it is ok. Mine rotates at 7lb
