As the tittle says I need to know if the viscous unit can be repalced on a Borg Warner Transfer box without removing the transfer box from the vehicle?  The vehicle in question is a 1992 RRC auto.

It still allows one to drive but when playing at Worcester at the weekend I lost the ability to get up hills or out of ruts.  Only the unladen wheels got drive and a light metallic grating could be heard from the centre of the Rangie.  IIRC the viscous unit is only attached to the front output shaft!

If it can, does anyone have any hints or links to information on how best to do it.

Yes very easy job, remove front prop, undo all the bolts, have a jack under the gearbox mount as well !! Remove unit, replace, put propback on. But normally they seize so both axles are locked and drive with no slip, it really doesn't sound like that's your problem ?

Ashcrofts site used to have a how to do it as well.

Thanks guys.  swapped.  Only prop to put back on (spare one as two nuts rounded!) and replace exhaust.  So hopefully will be able to test at the weekend and fingers crossed it was the VC.  If not ....... transfer box out!!
