Through alot of wet mud, is it ESSENTIAL to use a bit of cardboard etc to cover up the radiator? Does this have much of an impact on the temperature of the engine etc and if i did get mud in the rad, wont it come out with a pressure washer on a gentle setting/hose?

never use a pressure washer - will do more damage than good bending all the fins. Just use a normal hose pipe.
Personally I'd never block the rad off with cardboard, in deep mud/water the rad wil be submerged so it'll get in from the back anyway. What I do now on the shogun is take the grill out and wash it out with a hose, if it's very bad I'll pull the rad off the car to do it.

also if you have the second rad for your aircon you get a mud build up in the void between them this causes over heating problems go on ask me how i know . if you can the best idea is to put a bit of tarp in front of your grill before you go in then remove after just look at the l/r wolf waddind cover to get the idea . upcardboard aint any good it gets wet then cloggs the rad .

If your wading according to the book and keep moving steadily forwards until you out the other side, then very little water should end up in the engine bay and blocking the rad from behind. If however you like wallowing muddy water then cleaning out afterwards is your only option.
After one pay and play I ended up cleaning the radiator using a mug and a stream and flicking water at the rad until the enough of the mud was cleared to get home. Boring, but better than a cooked engine.
Hose a low pressure from something like a hose pipe with a nozzle on the end to direct it is ideal. If the rad is very blocked then washing the mud off the front is not enough. keep hosing down the rad until you can see water bubbling out the other side.
