Disco grinding
« on: November 09, 2009, 21:54:47 »
Driving my mums discovery 300tdi (N) around to see if i want it (which i do) but there is a noticable grinding noise. Its more noticable low down around 1500-2000 rpm then seems to dissapear. I went up a gentle soft grassy slope in Low with diff lock engaged, it got half way up and started spinning at which point i thought the front diff was going to exit and carry on its journey.
I've clambered underneath it tonight and shook the input flange to the diff which felt tight. Im praying to alsorts that its a wheel bearing but i don't think that it is. Is there anychance that the front diff bearings are nackered or something internal that could be nackered.
Ill be putting it on the lift at work tomorrow and have a poke around, just wondered if there was something that i should be looking out for?

Cheers

John

Sounds more like a front shaft. Take the six bolts around the flange off and pull the shaft out each side, it will be obvious if its snapped anywhere.
