Feeling Left Out??
« on: November 11, 2009, 10:36:55 »
Through the grapevine it appears there are some members who think they have not been invited to events or have been treated differently to others...

We know you can't please all the people all the time but...mistakes are made and wires are crossed. Unfortunately there are some who seem intent on making things difficult.
You don't have to be a Regional Rep in order to organise events but the majority of events are organised by those who have VOLUNTEERED to be a Rep as they want to help others get out and about as much as they like to. The responsibility for checking the status and/or conditions of lanes and the availability of venues is down to them so they are the first to get it in the neck when things go wrong or somebody's not happy.

We, as Mud Clubbers, have some self imposed rules in order to keep things running smoothly. A code of conduct we apply when using lanes etc.
Is it too much to ask that new members or those we don't know personally make some effort to get to Regional meets or at least make themselves known to the Rep before they start asking for information on lanes etc in their area without us knowing anything about them. We are all well aware of those who have used the knowledge of organised groups to find out where they can go and then return to said lanes and abused them, making things difficult for the people who green lane respectfully. Checking out the status and conditions of lanes takes time and effort so this info isn't just handed out to anybody who asks.
Although sometimes it's the people we already think we know who take advantage...but anybody breaking the rules that are applied to an event wont get invited back.
Rules can get bent from time to time but  there have to be some in place so that everybody is treated fairly. If you hear about an event going on that you'd like to go to don't just tag along with a mate thinking it'll be alright...it won't be your mate that gets the flak if anything goes wrong. Find out who the organiser is and make contact.

If you have a mate who wants to come along to an event encourage them to come to a meet or make contact with the Rep or organiser so they know a bit more about who they're taking out with them. Pm's work as much for the organisers as they do for those who haven't the time for meetings...drop a pm to your Rep occasionally and let them know what you'd be interested in doing. If you hear about an event you think you should have been invited to but not heard anything, then don't go moaning to your mates about it. Get in touch with the organiser...it may be for a very good reason or just an oversight, but don't go getting all uptight about it. It's unlikely to be personal.
If you do get to attend an event there are going to be rules in place there as well...
follow them to be fair to others.

And if you're still not happy with what's being organised for you...Organise things yourself! :x

thats why a lot of the time peoople who want information on greenlaning and are too lazy to look at a map are not given any grid refs or information by the people in the know unless they know them.

I don't mind people asking for local help. Took a first timer out last Sunday for a day on
 some local lanes.
Have to admit that I like to meet them before I offer though.

Without help, some will just drive where ever they like, some will walk away from
the hobby, and the ones who do walk away are usually the ones we should be
looking after.
The others will do what they want either way

 Just my thoughts.

if we as a group don't help people we have not met then do we not run the risk of stagnating? would it not be better to educate those we meet so that they can choose a reponsible approach in future. also is it wise to get hung up on what others may do in our absence?

Agreed

We all have a responsibility to educate, so that the newbies don't get their information from some twit on Youtube ripping up a lane. I won't just hand directions out to people I don't know, but they're more than welcome to come along with the local laning posse and explore with us.

I used to organise a few greenlane meets for another club but got fed up with it in the end due to the numbers getting larger and larger every time but the feedback or even thanks getting less. Most just seemed to turn up follow me or one of the other volunteers that had spent time recce-ing routes with me then go home without even introducing themselves :| Also you would get the hangers on that just turn up at the meet point without letting you know they were coming and knowing full well that all the groups were full.
So I then decided to keep it to just going out with a mate or two but it seems you can't even do that without people getting annoyed that they weren't informed or invited (people I've never even met ) It does seem that some people believe if you mention laning on here or any forum that it must be a 'group' sanctioned event and therefore open to all'n'sunder

Hay guys.
Just an idea but maybe a rep or mod could put a list of who each area's rep is so that it makes it easier for those who do want to meet and go out with the reps..... im unsure my self who my local rep is but i have taken a few out before...

Yes, indeed it was suggested and a good idea it was too, the only problem came when hardly anyone responded to my plea for help from the reps themselves, unfortunately I don't have time to run around after people to get info so it didn't get completed.

I'm still happy to collate a list if anyone cares to put forward their info, otherwise I won't bother.

Sorry if I'm not responding amicably but as we all know, to get info out something has to be put in.

I'll leave it to the reps to contact me if a list is to be compiled.

I've left this post running for a while, but it's time for me to join in. One of the things I like MOST about this club... is there is no organisation.

No committte
No rule book (apart from tread lightly of course)
No fees

If you want to go out... put a post up....

If you want to go out but don't know where to go, contact the local ROW office for the legal routes... then... make a plan and put a post up.

If you want to go out but don't have the experience.... Put up a post and tell someone that... I'm sure you'll get an invite.

The whole point of this club is it's for the members by the members... NOT for the members by the reps. If that's what you want, there are plenty of more formal clubs out there... and some of them even have web pages and forums. Fill yer boots!

Long live Mud Club, it's philosophy and it's membership!
