Air Horns

Hi Guys

What's the law regarding musical air horns on Land Rovers?

I've seen them advertised on e-bay with a range of different tunes for £25 new (plus £7.50 postage).

I've got one for my uncle at his request (for a tractor), and am now tempted to get one my self (I have a 1990 110).

I suspect they are not legal for road use, so you would need to retain your normal horn on the normal horn switch.

hiya i've got musical air horns but they are wired up to a seperate switch on the floor, i was told by an mot inspector that i would need to retain the original hooter for legal reasons. :D  :D

Ok, IANAL, so this may be complete rubbish:

Pre 1972 vehicles:  Yes, you can fit air horns, even musical ones.
Post 1972:  Air horns are legal if they are single tone only.

In both cases, the horn must be capable of operating without the engine running.  Ie, if driven off an air compressor, it must be an electric one.

Just reading my MOT manual on this one. Not too sure whether you can fit one based in the following.

One of the reasons for rejection is:
"Two or more tone horn fitted - NOTE: When operated, a two or more tone horn automatically produces a sound which alternates at regular intervals between fixed notes"

Safe answer is to have a standard one switchable for the MOT.

As an aside, Pre 1906 vehicles can be fitted with a gong, bell or siren  :lol:

If you read on it says that multi tone horns may be fitted to
Pre 1972 vehicles, Two-tone can only be used as part of an
anti-theft device.

My copy dates from the Mid '90's so it may be different now. But, it's unusual for things to be changed retrospectively on the MOT. However, you live and learn  :D

To answer James question you carn't legally use musical air
horns on a 1990 vehicle, Nothing to stop you fitting them and
using them on off road sites. :)

Leave the standard one in place and have the musicals on a
seperate switch.

Or have two horns and pull one out for the MOT. I used to have air horns on my capri years ago and they were cool. They ran off an electical pump.

I had twin air horns on a motorbike once (don't ask, it was a long time ago and I was young :roll: ). One day I noticed that they didn't sound quite right - a bit muffled. I found the problem quite quickly ... a whopping great big bee rammed into one of the cones :shock:  :lol:  :lol:

as an aside to this thread how easy/difficult is it to train as an mot inspector? i,m having a think about my career direction sort of moment :?

I have two, 2 tone air horns on my disco. 8)  
It has been through 2 MOT's with them on and passed twice, without a comment.

It's not the two tone that's a problem, it's if they played a tune. You can have as many tones as you like, so long as they all sound at the same time!

its not hard,you just need to be in a garage that can put you forward for the tests & to give you some experiance.the garage i was in before i left at chrimbo were training 1 of the mechanics & all he did was go on a 2 day course,sit & pass a 100 question test then do 3/4 mots then the inspectorit came in & watched him do his routine to see if he gets his ticket,

My local garage asked me if I wanted to go for it, I was tempted but with home commitments was not going to be practical to the garage, as I would not be able to guarantee when I could do the mots

A few years ago I would have more than likely done it though

If this is the case I would get another set. For muddy off roaders air horns unless fitted up high would not be practical as the cones would get clogged up.
