200tdi probs... dieing at 3000rpm... Help....
« on: December 19, 2009, 21:33:42 »
Just went to town about 6miles away... ice on the road so was going very slowly.. but then when I tried to go above 25/30  it wouldnt.... so got some fuel in-case of being a bit low... and checked everything else levels wise.... was a bit better on the way back but still nothing above 30mph.... anyone any thoughts... it is about -10 here at the moment and trying to snow...   I have just changed the fuel filter thinking it might have been blocked etc but no change....

Cheers

Dave

Sounds more like waxing

When the weather like it is now is colder than normal

The diesel starts to get thick and thats probably your problem

Hope this helps

also could be the wrong oil  in your gearbox some people dont read the book and put ep80/90 in when it should be atf dexron ( automatic fluid ) this could be causing your problem as on a good day its too thick but in this cold weather it would be like grease to start and as your not doing speed its not warming and thinning

It is a manual.... just going swop the lift pumps over between the 110 and disco... as its off the road at the moment.... right back to the elusive spanner hunt...

On one of the banjo bolts on the injection pump is a very fine filter, just check that it has no water that is freezing in it.I think it is the one from the pump but cannot remember for sure.

So it revs up fine when you first start then after 45 seconds it wont rev.

That sounds like a blocked filter :-k

Or on some cars a blocked tank breather, but I'm not sure that applies to the TDi :?

Have a look at the intercooler hoses, they can delaminate and act like a butterfly valve strangling the air to the engine.
Also check the pipes coming out of the top of the tank, the metal elbow corrode and you could be sucking in air with the fuel.

If all else fails, replace the lift pump. It would at least rule it out if the problem continues.

there again if youve had the pipes of your lift pump have you put them back on properly and not reverced the flow ie: your pumps sucking insted of pushing  its a coman mistake

Just got the lift pump replaced... working -7 with freezing fog is just so nice.... thought it had fixed the problem at first but then as soon as the engine warmed through that was it back to the same as before.... took the pipes off the intercooler to turbo and all seem to be fine... going to get the pipes back on and have a look at the fuel pipes... it doesn't seem to have a sedement bowl.... something that I don't think made it when the V8 was taken out, not by me I hasten to add.....

Thankyou to all for help so far....

It sounds like a blockage or kinked pipe, the fuel is filling up in the filter but when demand gets higher there just aint anoth fuel coming through!! TRY THAT!

The sedimenter was dropped on the early 300 TDi in favour of an oil filter with sediment space, be careful when swapping them BTW.

I think later 300 TDis found they crept back in, despite not being mentioned in themanual.

Well had an interesting day.... split between the farm and trying to sort it out... went for the bottle and fuel test... it ran up perfectly... so started looking at the pipe back to the tank.... well.. 4m of fuel pipe later I can actually go to work in the morning.... still not quite 100% right but shes heading in the right direction....

A big thanks to all.....

Dave

P.S. Merry Chrimbo and jolly good new year when it comes....
