1978 rangie V8 won't start since Dizzy change
« on: December 29, 2009, 16:47:53 »
Ok I know this is something silly so any help would be great. I have change the distributor on my 3.5 V8 1978 Range rover. I did NOT change the dizzy cap. I have fitted new dizzy the same angle as old unit an when I got it to fire I got one almighty backfire and just does small backfires since. What am I doing wrong?  Worked on cars for years an this V8 is driving me mad

Thanks Brett

how did you set the timing,

i would set it up by the book, and then start it and turn the dizzy and time it by ear, doing it like this is the best way to set them up, i have always had problems with them doing by the book

I have had the same problem, Took the dissy out without marking it up and put it together 180 out. Was back popping through the inlet and blowing the pipe off the plenum chamber. I also has to change the amp pack on the side of the dissy. Once you clocked it you wouldn't do it again.

Ok I know what I' ve done, I have fitted the dizzy case to same place as the old dizzy but not set rotor arm the same, so this is is the wrong place. need to pull the dizzy back out an set it all up again. Are there any markings on the pully's so you know when the engine is at top dead centre???? Thanks

Now that you have been cranking it over, you need to find out if your on combustion or exhaust stroke.

yes there is a mark on the bottom pulley that lines up with a mark on the timing case,

but it might not be acurate, mine was out by a fair bit,
