Anyone use Kaspersky Virus protection?
« on: January 10, 2010, 20:39:02 »
Looking for a new anti virus package and was wondering if anyone uses Kaspersky?

Is it good/bad better than others/worse?

Cheers

Darren

Yes I have used it for the last year on several machines, it seems good, daily updates and no issues.

If buying a new copy do shop around, when mine was expiring the link to renew was at c£30, bought new one at £18.00.
Novatech have good price including a DVD, also Amazon or go via Smile website, look under Security, NB don't need to be able to log in, there is a special edition (they are all the same), for Smile customers, but it says you need to pay by Smile Card but at the checkout it offered Paypal as well, so no check that I can see, though I am a Smile customer. There was an email back from them saying needed to check Papal but a couple of hours later another email came with the licence key, just download and install.

There are also versions for 3 computers at not much more.

I was using Kaspersky for the last year and found it fine (didn't slow me down or get in the way). It usually comes out top in reviews as the best product and has good WOM recommendations. I have a computer shopper from last month and its wins that review. Ill dig it out and see if I can pass on the results.

the other thing is that the free Microsoft virus tool is also getting good reviews (In normally Microsoft cynical places) so for an average home user this could be a fair choice. Im using it on my Windows 7 install (as I dont have a Kaspersky Win7 product yet) and its also been fine re performance. I have never really been a victim of viruses (possibly because I of good web/email practice) so my comments relate to performance degradation/ease of use and review stats of catching viruses.

I would suggest you take a good, careful look at Avast.

Been using it for 3 years now. No problems whatsoever, much less resource hungry than anything else I've tried.

I'll second Avast.

You don't really need half of the features that some virus scanners will try to load you down with. Firewalls, for example, should be provided by your router rather than having to run one on your individual PC. Providing that you follow basic security procedures such as never opening unsolicited email attachments and being picky about what you install then you'll be fine.

HI,
We use it on around 200 work machines both pc and laptops. No problems, runs in the background takes a while to scan but other than that good.
