Recovery services for heavy vehicles

I'm an AA member, and I pay them a hefty wodge of cash every year to provide recovery services, but they won't cover me for a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes.  The 101 is 4.26 tonnes.

The RAC will cover me, if I'm a Caravan & Camping Club member, but it's quite costly to do this and only really makes sense if I cancel my AA membership.  But I'm tied into the AA until November, to my amazement.

The AA can cover me on a special policy through a company called Safeguard, but Safeguard will only provide recovery services if I insure the vehicle through them too, and they won't insure it...

Can anybody recommend a company who will sell me a single per-vehicle recovery policy for a 30 year old 4.25 tonne camper, without charging the earth?

As it stands, my only option is to join the CCC and the RAC, which will cost about a hundred quid.

I doubt you will get it much less than that... you are into the realms of HGV recovery at that weight.

With ours, we joined the CC as I mentioned before and used the Club's Recovery Policy which was organised through Green Flag.  We got 2 way comprehensive cover, was about 70 quid a year I think... plus the cost of CC membership.

i got caught out when they wouldn't tow my brothers van, when the engine blew,
the AA, as a gesture of good will allowed me to join on a special vehicle policy for the day and it cost 165 quid and that was cos i'd been a customer for years and hadn't used their service

we were with RAC several years ago, the caravan wheel came off, the caravan stopped in the grass verge, but simon could not get the jack under, rang RAC only to be told they wouldn't come out as it was the caravan was broke not the landie, :roll:  :roll:   i told them they had abanonded me with 4 young children (trying to get them to come out) simon broke the gaslocker on the caravan so we were alright in the end.  needless to say RAC got cancelled been with AA ever since.

I'd double check that your caravan is covered with the AA Debbie. A few years ago both dropped caravans. I think it's down to the extra expense of having to recover a caravan. Which is why the deal came about between the CCC and the RAC. It's actually not a bad deal. You join the CCC and then get a discount with teh RAC which makes their recovery a little bit cheaper anyway.

the AA wrote off the family caravan many many years ago.

'Bout 15 years ago, on a family holiday to France, the a-frame broke (fortunately on the last day), AA arranged for one of their french partners to pick it up, carry it to the port, put it on the ferry.  They then collected it and brought it home a couple of days later.  Upon arriving at our house, the driver ignored our advice to take it down the drive by hand and proceeded to reverse down the drive with the van on the back of his piggy back truck, proceeded to scrape the whole van down a large oak tree (the tree didn't duffer at all) completely writing it off.

The driver was very embarassed.

AA paid out though so it was all OK in the end.

try brittania rescue i get a deal through Work BT and CSMA but the cover is very good and i won't swap them for nothing drivers are excellent and nothing is to much trouble and they are a bit cheaper aswell

ill second that,brittania rescue are well good considering ive had my car brought home once & my dads old rangie a few times(diffs or electrics)his 90 twice (bent conrods   )

I'm with the the caravan club with greenflag rescue picked up my Jeep too many times to count  :oops: even after the "Tixover" mishap, also with caravan never a problem and cheap.
