car won't start
« on: February 12, 2010, 19:10:59 »
The disco won't start. its a 300 tdi, P reg. Power is getting to the starter motor but there's just a whirring noise. I don't think it's engaging. The electrics seem to be playing up a little (Alarm system). Can it be connected? I've also noticed a Heat/Burning smell latly. Smells something like over cooked brakes or clutch (mines an auto). Any info on a remedy. Thx Ian

It can ground through the handbrake cable as well, could explain the burning smell?

Try running a wire from battery Pos to starter sol. This will by-pass alarm system if engine turns over then it could be alarm system(SPIDER) unit just had to change the one on mine with similar problem.

I think i might need to change the spider wiring as other little things are occuring like the flashing of lights and bleeping seem to have stopped when i arm/disarm the alarm. How would i go about replacing it? I've took the starter motor off and all looks ok. I'll regrease it a little and refit. If i wanted a bosch motor where would i get one from and how much. Thx Ian

Took the dash apart to access the spider and it wasn't there. will i have one some where else. The disco has the problems associated with a faulty spider (sudden cut out, alarm/immobiliser problems, won't start) but i don't seem to have one. any advice? Thx Ian
