Steering Damper

I have a '73 series III - thinking about fitting a steering damper.

Anyone tried it? Good/bad idea?

Easily fitted and can make a big difference to the driving.

If you use your Landy quite a bit on the 'rough stuff' then you will benefit from less wobble from the steering wheel as you go over rocks and bumps.

I think it would also depend on what size tyres and steering wheel you have too. I have 9.00x16's and a 13" steering wheel with no power steering but don't have any problems but that might be partially down to the fact that my tyres easily roll over objects that smaller tyres would hit and cause the steering to 'snap' to the side.

 :)Hi there!!  I have an 1980 109 safari.  I fitted the damper, and what a difference!!  Nearly, self centres too!!  I have a standard steering wheel and 31x10.50x15 at's on it and the only problem I have is parking.  God that can be hard work!!  I have the turning circle of a cruise liner, and the power of a hamster under the bonnet, but I still love driving the old girl around!! :D

the damper goes from the nearside chassis rail/dumbiron area to the long draglink (has a mount on the draglink to accept it and if needs be you can buy the chassis mount) ...

i keep thinking of using my old disco damper that i have laying around, but they aren't expensive from that well known auction site...

i haven't bothered for the last 12 months tho and this is my daily driver, if driven often enough and your steering is in "good" condition i don't believe you actually need them except "possibly" to protect you from the steering whip if you clip something that tries to pull the wheel suddenly, my steering more or less self centres quite nicely, is light when on the move and not too heavy when manouvering...

i run rough old tyres when going out in the dirt and a nice set of General SAG's for road use or gentle (ish) greenlaning

Another point is tracking - for some reason a lot of people don't bother getting the tracking done on Series motors (possibly because they do so few miles as to not bother about tyre wear).  When I got the 2A, the steering was vague, heavy & had quite a bit of play.  Adjusting the box got rid of the play, and changing the tracking from 6 deg toe out(!) to 1 deg toe in completely transformes the drive.
