R380 Reconditioning

Going to strip down the old gearbox out of my discovery (300) and have a go at reconditioning. The reasons for taking it out was that she was griding/very notchy into 2nd and 3rd and sounded like the layshaft/ first motion shaft bearing wanted to escape. Ive not had anything to do with gearboxes and Ive got a replacement in the car so for that reason i thought id take a peak.
Could, or is it as easy as replacing the 2 bulk rings and all the bearings or is it more likely to be the syncro hubs them selves? Surly someones had a go at this or am I the only one with a gearbox like that  ;). Also are there any special tools that I would need to get a hold of?

i rebuilt mine , did have to utilise kit , and work things  round in my own way, i got all my parts from ashcroft engineering who were most helpfull. you will also need a dti guage for setting up the end float when you rebuidl it . they have selective washers . and they arent that cheap so try to get it right 1st time. you will have to get a manual . think i downloaded mine off the net somewhere . to be honest i think next time i will pay and have one of theres , i was in the same position as you but have knowledge of boxes but not  an r380 and thought it not the easiest. bet it cost me 150 pound cheaper to do it myself by the time i bought all the bits. hope this helps . alan
