Hummer brand to die
General Motors' Hummer brand will be wound-down following an unsuccessful attempt to sell it to Chinese firm Sichuan Tengzhong Industrial Machines Co. Ltd. (Tengzhong).
The Hummer brand has always courted controversy, chiefly from environmental protesters who questioned the validity of the huge gas-guzzling 4x4s.
Even the Chinese government seems to agree, it not willing to help Tengzhong in its bid to buy the American brand.
John Smith, GM's vice president of corporate and planning alliances said: "we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed."
GM has stated it will continue to honour Hummer warranties and provide service support and spare parts to its worldwide customers.
Until the announcement, Hummer produced the H2 and H3 production models for sale in the UK.
The £50,000 Hummer H2 is powered by a 6.2-litre V8 engine, which offers a combined fuel consumption figure of just 16.2mpg and 412g/km of CO2.
