Hi Arnie,

Those electric fans are part of the air conditioning system and only come on when the aircon is in use. I'm sure that they could be rewired as normal cooling fans but it might be a bit of a job.

I've had three Tdi Discoveries and removed the viscous fans on all of them with no ill effect - the motor runs so cool normally. I even drove to the South of France and back one summer without the fan and the temp gauge never went above 1/2 way despite cruising at 75-80mph in 35 degree temperatures :-)

Actually!!

The two electric fans are already wired to a switch that turns them on when the temp rises!

I've removed my viscous fan as well as the entire aircon system but left the fans in place. On the odd occasion my temp rises (usually when I have a heavy trailer on the back on lots of hills!) the aircon fans kick in automatically and the temp drops again! Its a really handy backup.

Crazymac, I'm aware of that but they don't come on until the temperature is around 100 C and they are timed to run for 10 minutes only. In my view, that's too little - too late to be certain not to blow the head gasket.

YMMV :-)

I have no idea what the temp is they kick in at so i'll take your word for that, its just over the half way mark on my gauge which is ample time on mine to bring the temp back down, maybe because I don't have the aircon rad it makes it easier for the air to flow?

isn't the 10minute thing only for after engine/ignition has been turned off and they run as long as needed when engine running?

When I removed my viscous I replaced it with a double fan setup from a Freelander.  Big Rich made up a frame for it and it sits perfectly behind my rad.  Wired in so it's off, on or switched by thermostat.

Job done.

Just bear in mind that a pair of electrics can only shift about half as much air as a viscous in good nickm they will cost easily twice what a new viscous unit will cost if you buy good ones and still not be as good.

I was advised by Kenlowe NOT to fit electrics, so I spent the cash on a new rad and visocus hub.  Job done.

The air conn fans will run if the underbonnet reaches above 60degrees on a V8 that is shut down, that is driven by the engine ECU to keep the fuel from boiling.

They also switch on if the engine overheats because the airconn rad can block the engine rad even if the airconn isn't running.

Plus of coourse they come on as soon as the airconn is switched on, unless you turn the heater blower off!

There is a thermostatic scitch in the thermostat elbow to run the airconn fans but as said the engine has to get quite hot before this happens, I wouldn't rely on it to protect a V8 on it's own.

Blue doesn't have airconn and it came fitted with twin kenlowes, they are ok but when I'm greenleaning is when it gets hottest and the fans pull and awful lot of current, they have melted a apir of 30 amp fused relays before now and shredded a new fanbelt in about 3 hours!  they put a lot of strain on the electrics when thay are running.
