Advice on using a Snorkel with LPG
« on: March 21, 2010, 19:44:56 »
Hi All

I have a 3.9v8 Disco and wanted to fit a safari snorkel.  Someone has suggested that this is not a good idea as i run both petrol and LPG.

Any thoughts.

Steve

Lpg dont like to much air flow. Should be ok if you turn the top around so it faceing the rear.  Sure someone else in the know may know something new.

I dont think it would make any difference.  All you are doing is extending the air intake from the original filter box you arnt removing filters or restrictions of any kind.  You may have to turn the top around to face the rear but this is probabily a good idea no matter what engine you have to stop the rain etc being forced down the intake.

But what do i know i aint got a snorkel yet

I could never get a straight answer out of anyone. I'm still waiting for a Snorkel wearing V8 LPG disco to come along and prove if it is true or not.

One side says it will muck it up the other moan as the pipework is restrictive and it looses air.  I would like to know as i have had a few close calls now and getting a little worried that i'm going to drown it one day in a puddle.

I also am having trouble getting an answer.

I have now spoken to several people who say it will not work, but none of them are talking from experience. I have however spoken to a company that specialize in LPG conversions and they tell me that it is possible, but may require some fiddling with restricting the airflow to get it to run properly.

I would have thought that the airflow from a snorkel was less than that from the standard airbox, as the pipework must restrict the airflow, any thoughts ?

I now have a real dilemma, do I bite the bullet and cut a hole in the side of my disco only to find it wont run properly or do I just sit back and hope that I don't get it to deep when I go to Billing in a couple of weeks. ?

Let's guess you have a mixer-type LPG system.   If it were a multipoint type it would be unaffected.

A mixer type will be affected by the change in freedom of airflow, but that should be able to be tuned out easily.  You will need to re-tune the LPG system.
The vital thing to avoid with the snorkel is introducing a ram effect, as already pointed out, which would introduce air pressure changes to the situation as well.

I have a mixer type LPG system on a straight 6 with a snorkel. with the LPG tuned properly it is unaffected and my ram is facing forward. I have done aprox 30,000 miles with no problems. I have heard that if the LPG is out of tune it will be affected.

I've got a safari snorj=kel on Blue, which is a V8 with LPG.

A couple of years ago we did an experiment to prove what I knew all along, this talk of ram-air is rubbish!

Blue runs with an old-school mixer system, it relies on the vacuum generated by the engine to regulate LPG flow, it needs the restriction of the "injector" ring too do this and any chang ein air filter or inlet will effect it.  having air pressure under you bonnet can cause problems too so I sealed the leading edge with an old door rubber.

The issure with a snorkel though is the extra restriction on air flow, this accounts for a pressure change 10 times or more than that created by so-called ram-air.

If you run the snorkel all the time then get the LPG retuned, or do like I did and connect the LPG to an elbow on the side of the airbox, make a blank plug for the fornt of the airbox and only fit it when you go wading, at low revs Blue will run on LPG or switch to petrol for wading (it's easier to burn so less likely to missfire anyway).
