Help needed ! re battery change on td 5 90
« on: March 23, 2010, 18:31:50 »
This morning i changed my main battery for a new one. having completed this i turned the ignition to hear a buzzing sound. THis lead me to the main relay under the passenger seat which was causing the buzzing. I swapped a few relays round and it still did it. I now have only a very faint glow plug light and engine synmbol next to it on the dash. any ideas would be much appreciated
and on the eigth day god created ..... Landrover

Sounds like a flat battery, the 12v is a nominal figure, I've just tested mine at the anderson connector and am getting 13.8v, I would put it on charge overnight and test it tomorrow

Don't worry about the 1.2v Chris that was my fault
The problems only started after the battery was changed for a new one  :-k the temp gauge does go up into the red but only when the main ECU relay ( the one buzzing ) is removed and the ignition is switched on.Is it possible that the ECU could of damage when the battery was changed over

The fun continues   OK then we ran a wire from pin 86 on the main ECU relay (the one buzzing under the drivers seat) down to an earth point and   it has stopped the buzzing, the fuel pump fires into life and the glow plug relay has switched on all from when you put the ignition on, BUT it still will not start up, it is spinning over nice and fast but not even attempting to start, not even a bit of white smoke from the exhaust  :-k starting to think that the injectors are not putting any fuel in, so does anyone have anymore ideas or suggestions before we start taking the cam cover off to check the injectors  :?

As an idea can you not get it plugged in ? may show a stored fault code? or show injectors not pulsing  :-k  Dont really know much about diagnostics, But may be able to point you in the right direction  :?

pointless taking the lid off, you'll only be able to look at the injectors and hum and arr.
is the mil lamp illuminating ?
im abit tired now so the brain isnt working as it should, but ill have a think tomorrow in the day and then have a play with my comp truck tomorrow night.
but [Edited] dont get poking live feeds up any wires.
if you plug it into nanocom it wont tell you much apart from either a logged or current problem with open circuits on injectors.
the ecu wont get damaged unless you cross the polarity...then its shot. my comp truck has a engine kill and even when its been nocked off via that and not the ignition it still fires up.

Funny you should say that SOMEONE (not me) did flash the live to the body when changing over the battery which was why i was thinking of a poorly ECU  :( the mil lamp will only work when we earth out pin 86 on the main relay, which got thinking about maybe a burnt out earth track in the ECU  :-k

eeek
not good.
i do have a ecu her that will start any td5....but obviously im in stoke on trent which doesnt half the situation.
can you get your hands on any td5 ecu. doesnt matter about the alarm as it will start the engine and stop after around 4 seconds.
that will at least eliminate the ecu

it will start it up but stop after a few seconds.....all it will do is make the guages work back to front
