Disco 300TDi into 90 2.5td - Alternator problem
« on: March 28, 2010, 11:51:17 »
i have just helped a friend fit and wire up a 300Tdi (non EDC) (discovery engine) into a 2.5TD 90 (1990 G)

it fired up first time, and all the wires whent to the correct place, but we are having a few problems

i will start with the Alternator problem

the alternator has 3 terminals on it one id a big terminal B+ (main battery), smaller Terminal D+ (???), and male spade terminal W (Charge Light i think?)

i cant get the alt to charge, if i connect to W the light doesnt work at all, if i connect it to D+ it flickers but still doesnt charge,

does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 2.5 TD 90 charge light and the wiring diagram for a 300Tdi discovery Alternator

or any hints or help as to what is wrong

and secondly, the coolant temp sensor is 300tdi and the temp guage is 2.5 td, but when running the engine to check it worked and got to temp, the guage went up to just in the red, but the engine was warm, the rad was not even luke warm, is this beacause the temp guage is the wrong one for the sender??

Well, the D terminal should be the charge light because the W connector is to allow a tachometer to be connected to it.
As for the temperature guage, the discovery temperature sender needs to be changed for the defender version and then the temperature display will read correct.
Hope that helps

You will probably have two thick wires which should be joined and connected to the B+ terminal and the thin wire to the D+. The W terminal is for a rev counter feed.
The coolant gauge problem is solved by fitting the sender and gauge from a 300tdi Defender or do as i did and fit an aftermarket gauge which comes with a matched sender and tells you the actual temp of the engine not just a vague indication. TIM and VDO are both good makes and the senders fit straight into the 300 tdi without using the supplied adaptors.

cheers will look in to the Aftermarket sender and guage, but its in and running, and charging now, the engine doesnt get hot but guage shows hot, so will need sorting out once we can get that done

can i remove the 90 temp guage and fit the disco temp guage into the 90 dash???

It is easier to change the engine mounted ones over, just below the thermostat there should be the sender, take it out and change it for the one off the old engine or a defender 300tdi and it will all work properly
