thanks steve. i will be fitting a new stub axle so i will order a new bearing and seal, and also the mud shield,
i have seen the brass shim that you mentioned, where on the stub axle does this fit,

i can rebuild a classic beele with my eyes shut but new to the land of landys. lol

The brass ring goes around the housing where the needle bearing sits. I think the CV joint bears up against it.

I made the decision to re-used mine but getting it off the old stub was quite difficult. It's an interference fit and there are no projections to get a puller on so starting to move it not easy. Once it's moved, however, it's pretty easy to get it off the rest of the way. I used the corner of a flat blade screwdriver to turn the ring and create a gap between it and the axle. You can prise it off with the screwdriver blade.

Remember to smooth out any marks you make before refitting it.
