i've put a 300tdi into a soft dash and it now ticks over rough it was perfect in the disco it came out of has anybody got any idea's

Put a clear pipe in the fuel line from the lift pump to the high pressure pump & see if it dragging air,

That's the correct engine for that car, is it a V8 replacement or just a new(er) engine? either way I think it's something you've done connecting it up.
The old favourite, drop a pipe from the lift pump into a jerry can.

Did you replace the tank or get rid of the fuel pump in the tank? what about the in-line petrol filter?

changed pump in tank and got rid of filter

Check the sender unit, the pipes on the sender unit which come out the tankl have a habit of getting minute holes in them.
