I didn't get to talk to the guy. I assume the logs are needed for ballast? I would guess the back end would be relatively light otherwise?

Yeah probably. The chassis twist as part of the suspension (everything mounted to the chassis is tringulated to allow this), it can take a little bit of weight to get it all to work, otherwise they just pick a wheel.
