loss of power/white smoke
« on: July 18, 2010, 16:43:43 »
Been to billing, and did the mud run, made it through...but on way home wouldnt go over 1500 - 2000rpm and was pouring white smoke, automatically i thought turbo's gone, so got recovered, and recovery driver thinks head gasket  but still it starts perfect ticks over perfect, no water in oil/oil in water, no leaks, and not loosing any fluid, but now i have took my snorkel off, which had some dust in it which could well have gone into turbo, it wil rev up to 3000 but has like a bubbly wobbly feeling as its doing it and i cant hear no turbo whislte at all, please help me as some how ive got to get it fixed for tomorrow thanks to all

how you doin mate,i was with eugene when you rung about ya truck,it'd be interesting to see what the white smoke smells like, because if its idleing ok,if it dragged water in,with no doubt mud as well,it may have wrecked the injector tips,as they are very delicate, and you wont be able to tell by looking at them, you will have to have them tested to see if the spray pattern has changed,if it has, then the smoke could be excessive fuel,or another thing, pull the dipstick out, check the level,as it could of got in the sump, and picking the oil up with water in it too, causing the smoke,or worst case, bent con rod,but i would of thought you be able to tell if that happend to the way its idleing, cant say for sure without lookin and listenin.

Friend of mine went through a bomb hole possibly a bit too quick, no boost smoke comming out.... EGR had stuck. Luckily we had a spare blanking plate and that cured it. Ive made mine out of tin cut and drilled to shape.

If there's no turbo pressure then you shouldn't get excessive smoke, the pump won't fuel.

Mine makes acrid white smoke when the filter is blocked (dodgy bio-junk).

I wouldn't expect unburnt or excess fuel to make white smoke, it's either steam or lousey timing, in my case caused by incorrect fueling/starvation.

Start witht he basics, does it run any different with no turbo and have you run a boost guage in yet?

Don't like ther sound of the tinkling, that's a symptom of cracked rings amongst othet things.

Someone tell me again why a TDi is better than a V8 in the deep stuff :-k
