"On Ilkley Moor Ba'Tat"
« on: April 25, 2005, 23:29:06 »
I had a run up over here whilst I was over in Wharfedale this morning.
I'd been to Otley to take some assorted photos for the 'WebShots'.
I also suffered the indignity of a flat-tyre in the high-street.

Still after changing it & treating myself to dinner at the Wharfe View Cafe I headed over into Ilkley for some more photos.

Once they were taken I headed up the steep 'White Wells Road' & onto the Moor road.
No Off-Road Drivingsigns bordered the route in places. I'd checked the status of the road with Bradford Council a couple of days ago (still a public road, not even a RUPP)

I saw only 2 walkers up there, both smiled & waved
It's getting slightly washed out part of the way, but once the top is reached it's a wonderful view over Wharfedale & just right for the flask & buns :D

I realise that it's not very 'gung-ho' stuff, but it's a public road, so best behaviour....

It's not very long Gordon, just click on the 'Keighley Road'.

It's just a beautiful area up there :D

This is a nice little area a few miles away from Ilkley Moor. I took Andy over there last year

1. Because I gave you very little notice
2. You'd have got sick of me diving across roads to take photographs
3. You'd have come in handy to change my tyre
4. It would have been 'your shout' at the Wharfe View Cafe

Couldn't agree more, I could see the Lido, suspension foot-bridge, 'The White House',Almscliffe Crag, etc........ from up there.

Still didn't get a good picture of 'The White Swan', checked them when I got home & they were blurred(?!) bar the stable entrance

All outweighed by being up there, rather than in work, I would say

 Hi Richard. After reading your first post were you saw signs up saying No Offroad Driveing. I checked on the G.L.A.S.S Wayfinder site to see if a comment has been made, unfortunatley there has not been anymade. So ive left a comment about the signs, date sighted etc.  :D

 These signs are illegal, unless the council have downgraded the lane recently but i cant see that. Were the signs handmade or are they council property.
If in first you dont suceed, try second....
If it aint broke, your not trying ard enough....

The could have been Council produced, but I think part of the Moor is privately owned & they were on the grassland.
I presume they're just a 'gentle reminder'?

The road itself is 100% legal, as I wrote, I contacted Bradford Council ROW.

Besides I suppose the arguement (if I'd been stopped by militant ramblers) that I was on a proper road, and if they weren't happy, contact the ROW office & the Police using my registration to find me.

No, the 2 walkers  I saw waved & smiled. They probably were the sensible (happy to share) ones

Hi, if the signs are on Private land then they are legal to an extent. Like you say just warning signs by land owners which is fair if they have had problem users recently.
Pictures look great though, good veiws from the top.  :D

Indeed there are, it's only about 390metres above sea level, but the highest point around there :D
Pity it was misty down in the valley, still I'd forgotten to take my binoculars.
It gives me an excuse to go back soon , so do I tell Andy next time???

You missed this...

Meat & Potatoe Pie, Chips, peas. Pint of tea, Treacle Sponge Pudding all for £3.50

Only complaint.... they cut the chips too thin - almost french fries :x

Why would they be illegal if they were telling users to stick to the road? A byway, UCR, or any other lane is NOT off-road.
