colours of anti-freeze
« on: September 18, 2011, 17:19:33 »
Why are there so many different colours of anti-freeze ?
My TD5 has pink
1995 disco 300 has green
1999 disco 300 has blue
Ex mill s3 has green
1958 s1 has blue
What is the difference and can I change them all to the pink stuff.
all thoughts welcome
Phil

Car manufacturers went off and "unstandardised" antifreeze about 10 years ago.  Basically they do the same thing but some have different amount of certain minerals depending on the amount of alloy/plastic in the cooling system.

As long as you don't mix them you will be fine with Halfords normal antifreeze, the advanced can be used as well.

I was wondering, because it was just a dye before in old skool coolant with the colour not having any bearing though some fancy ones used change colour by design as an indicator of strength and age.

its to do with the "gender" of your motor....basically you add all the numbers on the vin plate together without using a calculator (you must do this twice), if the end result ends in an odd number then its blue (for a boy) even then its pink (for a girl) and if you get two different answers then its green (transgendered)
90..standardish

If you have half an hour to spare the look is up on wikipedia, it makes very dull reading but you will be able to impress people down the pub with talk of phosphates, silicates and dyes.
