restoring threads

Has anybody got any ideas on the best way to restore a stripped thread

the thread has been stripped out of a cast aluminimum housing, but I must use the existing allen bolts as they have a specific head size, so I can just tap out a new thread. Grrrrr.

"Apparently" make the joint even stronger - all airplane bolts are fixed using helicoils I seem to recall hearing somewhere.

i,d agree use a helicoil they should get you back to the right size when fitted

I'm a very big fan of helicoils.  When I was buying rotamoulding tools I used to prefer that all the threads were reinforced with them, as the tools were subject to heating/cooling cycles this would often lead to fretting (steel expands at half the rate of aluminium) and bolts would often come loose, especially with rough handling.  They make an excellent reapir as the insert grips or is glued to the parent metal and the insert provides a very tough running surface for the bolt.  Take your time and once finished you can forget it's there.

definately helicoil - worked a treat when I sheared a nut on the DPA pump last year :D
