Well I have popped the front diff on my 200 Tdi. So the question is, fresh axle or fresh diff. Any feedback on which will be easiest to do.

So long as its a complete diff and pinion assembly between prop and axle case then that will be easier. Setting up just a diff into the pinion housing can be fun, backlash and all that.

new diff. If you remove the prop and then undo the bolts around the axle where the chrome balls bolt on. Disconnect the track rod ends and then pull the hubs outwards. They will come out enough to clear the diff, Then simply unbolt the diff and brace yourself, it is HEAVY!

Thanks for the info. I was feeling that the diff route would be the easier (lighter and less to remove) of the two options plus I have comp discs on my axle so would then he wanting to chang this and then that, and while it's out change the springs........................ you know how these things start!!

Another question that has occured to me. Is there any difference in the diffs on series one discos. Mine is a '93 on an 'L'. Will a diff from any 200 or possibly 300 fit?

Thanks.
I will have to pop round to the local scrap yard on the way home tomorrow, he is a landy nut too and has a couple in the yard. Lucky for me I have the motor bike to get around on, unlucky for me it's starting to get damned cold early in the mornings.

I really do need to stop listening to the doom and gloom people out there. After I have done some investigating the diff is as ok as a 19 year old can be but I have ripped the splines off the CV joint and out of the drive flange.
All in all a much better situation I feel!!!!
