has it got a seperate starter solenoid? if so if you bridge the two big wires together does the starter then operate,if it does then it's more likely to be the solenoid instead of the starter motor, hope this helps!

has the battery got plenty of life in it,turn the headlights on and try starting it (if the lights go dim i would try jumpstartingit of another battery/car. if the lights stay bright look at the starter solenoid, when you turn the key to start is there any clicking noise or the starter trying to turn, if no try bridging the two main terminals( bolts with nuts on) together either with an old screwdriver and see if the starter then turns( there will be a few sparks) if it turns over then i would suspect the starter solenoid, if it doesn't then it sounds like the starter motor itself. hope this helps sort the problem. if not where abouts do you live as if it's not ar rom me i will be willing to give you a hand!! :)

if the starter spins it is either the clutch in the startermotor itself or possible the teeth on the ring gear worn, it might be worth taking off the starter and inspecting the teeth on the ring gear to check for damage, by all means send me some pics and i'll try my best to help.

common for them just to clog up with dirt, just undo the 3 bolts and take out and clean. u can play around with it out of motor more easily, just remember to clamp starter down or have good grip when you attach power  :wink: (jumper leads and battery will do)

don't have to be mud, has had a few year of abuse :) any leaking oil from back seal and a bit of clutch dust can make a sticky mess (quick check of breather hole on bottom of bell housing to see if any oil could indicating a leak) .
the starter motors on the petrol's are so basic very rarely they go wrong.
 best thing to do is take it out spin it over to see what happens. easy job and once off will be easy to see if any damage.

It could be the switching wire from the ignition, is there a broken spade end on the solenoid? or has the wire got a spade inside it?

just looked on mine, if its a white wire with a red stripe its the ignition feed fire, and should fit on a spade on the solenoid

If it spins its worth checking that the dog slides freely on the shaft, it cured mine!

but the starter will only spin when crossing the soleniod not off the key so surely there is a soleniod problem that needs to be sorted 1st??

UNfortunately for 2 reasons I cant do that the thepics. no camera till next week, and also the solenoid is tucked under the oil bath filter tray, and can only feel my way round it. But will draw a rough diag for you

I had the same problems as you with my starter and solenoid;
Solenoid had a broken spade connector from the ignition. Symptom was nothing happening when the key was turned. Solution was to fit a new solenoid. Mine only cost a fiver brand new.
Starter motor needed regreasing or cleaning. Symptom was whirring noise when key turned but no engine starting. I should fit a new one, but if it sticks (not very often) I just tap the starter with a club hammer through the gap next to the wheel. This works for now.
You may need to check your battery as well. If its old it may not be holding enough charge. Mine gave up when it got down to 3v across the terminals. The lights still work and don't dim when you look at them, but there's not enough juice to work the starter.
