another gearbox problem today
« on: June 11, 2005, 18:05:38 »
Hi all

just done a longish motorway run in 5th gear for a good hour solid at 70+mph, when we finaly came off the m/way the gear stick (manual) was very stiff like pushing againts a damper, it whent in and out of gear ok just the movement between the changes became stiff, we had to stop for about 15 min's to pick something up,  the car cooled down a bit and the gear selection returned to normal once we set of again, on the return trip the same thing happened, and again once cooled down returned to normal, this has only happened on a long trip its been fine driving at slower speeds localy, im thinking the gear oil is knacked and breaking down when it gets very hot, or could it be more serious???

cheers

I was told by a chap at Ashcrofts that it was caused by the plastic "ball" at the bottom of the gearstick expanding with the constant heat, which makes it difficult to move the gearstick.

Their solution - apparently - is to take the gearlever out and give this ball thing a good old rub with some wire wool to smooth it off a bit :)

Mine used to do it ... but doesn't any more ... without me doing anything ... very strange :?

Well the oil should be changed periodically, how old is it?

Ditto

Gearbox oil changed regularly.

Only other thing I thought of doing was running some kind of ducting from the front of the car to alongside the gearbox to direct some cool air onto the box - either that or fit an oil cooler to the gearbox somehow.

What mileage was the dealer service done at?

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40
