What size tyre on 3 spoke alloys ?
« on: June 17, 2005, 12:25:13 »
Hi all,i have done a search through all the old posts but i cant get my answer.

What i would like to know is,whats the largest tyre i can fit on the standard 3 spoke rangie wheel ?

I think i am going for BFG M/T tyres. My car has air suspension but i am thinking of getting rid as it will only work at standard height and is past its best,so a 2" lift is on the cards.Just wondered what will go.

Ive noticed 235 85 16 seems popular ,265's look good on defenders,id like those but i suppose i need better ground clearance so maybe a not so wide but taller tyre .

Your sudjestions please,
thanks

Ours came with something stupis like 285/70/16s on 3-spokes and it wouldn't go round corners.  235 is about the biggest I'd fit otherwise it's over-tired (and I don't mean yawning).

Sorry, spelling misteak, should have read over-tyred.  If hte tyre is too big for the rim then you get no feeling in the steering, the rim turns but the tyre doesn't etc etc, it's not a good experience.

ok thanks,i suppose it would be quite noticeable when sharp cornering.
So 235 85 16 then ?
I seen a rangie the other day and the tyre size seemed to be imperial !
It read 31 10.5 15. What size is that in normal tyre size :?

They are yank sizes, it is a 15" wheel so no good unless you want smaller wheels, it will sit at a similar height to a 265/75-16 (roughly).  I've seen rangies with 2" lifts and 31/10.5 and they look OK

any wider ??
i think ratmans rangie looks awesome,i want to lift mine  ,put some large tyres on ,then maybe go for the wide arches, just the cutting to the back door put me off a bit on the arches.I think the 235's look a bit skinny

The lift i've got on the Blue one is a OME 2" from Devon 4x4.

I have run the simexs (35/10.5 x 16) on this one off road with little trouble. Yes there was rubbing but not to bad.

With this lift you should be able to fit 33" to 34" diameter and up 12" wide tyres all depending on what you intend to do with the car.

would a 265 75 16 be ok on the standard 3 spoke alloy ??  they look really good,or am i un-necessarily (sp?) getting a too wide tyre and should go for 235x85R16 ?

thanks

Given that the OE fitment were 205R16 why would you want soemthing so big? 235/70/16 are a good popular size which keep the price down.  If you go too big you risk loosing grip in the sticky stuff and in snow/ice or heavy rain.

not 235 85 16 ??

I want better off road performance as thats where its mostly used,i thought wider tyres would be better as well as the extra height,as the defenders are fitted with 265's standard i thought they would be ok,and traction control and ABS should cope with the snow and ice,but i am after an opinion on this as i know little about landrovers so i value everyones opinion who knows what they are doing with rangie's.
So rr blues,you would reccomend 235 85 16 no bigger ?

Have got an 89 RR with 2" lift.  My recommendation would not to go any larger than the 235\85-16's.  I have two sets of tires (the yank way), one set is Grizzly Claw and they did do damage to the rear arches so they have been trimmed down.  The other set is Firestone MT's and have had no problem with them, if I would have chosen these in the first place I would not have had to trim the arches.  '
The 235\85 do look a bit skinny but they will get to the bottom of the mucky stuff and allow the tire to work.  I have been very pleased with both of my set ups

Forgot to mention that the Grizzly Claws are on steel modulars and the MT's are on the alloys.

I lifted the air suspension manually and im unsure of the height. What height do you think it looks like +2" +3" ?? I ask as i am planning to remove the air suspension as it is defective and replace it with coil springs and thats the sort of height i am after.
I think it looks like +3"

ay up,

sorry about the delay, raining when i got home yesterday.

any way after checking you have approvimately 2.5" of lift with the 235's and a height of 35" through the middle of the wheel.

hope this helps.

got springs +2" and pro comp dampers 2" longer travel,h/d spring retainers front and back ,shock turrets spring plates ,rear spring isolators all for the conversion this weekend.
I will keep the air compressor on board to inflate the tyres,i am already manually controling it now by connecting the appropriate pins on the ecu plug as the ecu has recorded an air leak fault code and wont inflate with it plugged in.
I have been driving around fine with a 2.5" lift and appart from the slightly more vauge steering and top heavy cornering its fine and even off road it was ok without any prop problems although the rear anti roll bar flipped upside down, well the link parts anyway.
