cant say i,ve heard of this on any engine unless he means it was running on its own oil, diesels can do this and rev to extremes until they go bang but its not common and i,ve only seen it on stuff thats rolled over

I've heard of it happening on a few cars too.As for oil burning in the sump I doubt there would be sufficient air present to allow this to happen. By mass you need 15 times as much air, so by volume many, many times more.
