What about a mass drive of 4x4's into London 'to see the sights' of course. I can't advocate that anything is done along the lines of Critical Mass, coz that would be very naughty of me!

i aint been to see the sights for a while now..... so could be a good time to go and have a look    :D  :D  :D

I see our old friends at the BBC are stereotyping on this issue as per usual, just watched the news and the clip of a 'gas guzzling car' was you guessed it a 4x4, the media should really know better, any wonder the antis are increasing.  Made me laugh though, the 4x4 was a 2 litre Frontera Sport, is that not a Cavalier engine??  I have 3 cars and all of them are 2.5 litre, a sting could be on its way but I'm bugg£$d if any politician is going to tell me what I can or can't drive no matter how hard work or costly it may be, I wouldn't mind but my 944 does about 1000 miles a year tops, it's not worth £400 for the priveledge!!

Rant over

The tax hike wont hit any of you unless you've bought a new BIG 4x4 since last year. Remember all the hype last time, the tax on my Disco went up a fiver.

maybe if they divided the CO2 up by the amount of seats the motor has - would this be fair?  ie CO2 output per person carried

this way a little 2 seater smart thingy could be less green than a tdi disco 7 seater

what do you think of this petition before I hit the go button, I don't want to get into trouble !!

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to stop goverment bodies driving 20mpg 4 litre jaguars and get them driving 35mpg Land Rover Discoverys that seat 7 so better for road congestion and also better for the world as you need less of them due to the fact they carry more people around.

Submitted by gareth Williams – Deadline to sign up by: 20 May 2007

Category: Government, politics and public administration

More details:

The government are hypocrits. They swan around in cars that pollute the air more as they do less MPG than most 4x4s. They do nothing to stop rants about 4x4 name calling i.e. gas guzzlers which divides road users and don't see any bigger picture apart from lining their pockets.

Increasing road tax for 4x4's is not the answer. Most 4x4's are shorter than most road cars so take up less room on the road and have better CO2 and mpg stats than most 2 litre plus cars. Why penalise us, why listen to groups of individuals who basicaly hate 4x4 users. Freedom of speech, freedom of car. There are other vechiles on the road that DO take up more room and DO have bad emissions, don't penalise 1 group.

It's been submitted now awaiting approval  :!:

Oh, haven't the spin meisters done a wonderful job of getting everyone wound up and ranting away.
1
The is no such vehicle class as a 4x4. Vehicles are grouped according to their emissions, and then only for vehicles registered after 2001.
2
The £400 is purely speculation.
3
No change can be retrospective, so pre 2001 vehicles will only be hit by the standard "cost of living" increase.
4
The likely change will be to Band G vehicles, and possibliy Band F, and in there are an lot of other vehicles other than 4x4's.

I have just done an interview for ITV Wales on this very subject, and pointed out to them that even things like a Mini Cooper S 1.6 would be hit, but that a lot of 4x4's actually will not be affected.

I love some of the comments on the Smart forum!! I do wonder whether some of these people actually live in the real world!
