Not quite sure what they mean when they say "the health impact of SUV's is significant:" then go on to talk about climate change and air pollution.
Yes ok, ALL forms of transport contribute to these in one form or another but the article reads that its only 4x4's that are making the problem worse than it already is.

Have any of these people stopped to consider the impact on the economy if they were to ban 4x4's?

Manufacturers would stop manufacturing 4x4's for the UK market, so immediately there will be large scale job losses in the motor industry. This will not be limited to just those people in Solihull, but also the knock on effect.

With no UK market for 4x4's, the only way our emergency services, utility companies, farmers etc could obtain them (assuming they had an exemption) would be via import, which will be expensive and difficult. I'm not certain of the europeanised legislation, but surely no UK market means the manufacturers would not bother getting type approval for the vehicles in the UK, and hence require anyone importing them to go the SVA route? Complex and difficult.

There would be no aftermarket industry, no specialist mechanics, parts manufacturers, you wouldn't even be able to pop to Kwik-Fit to get a new tyre, so the vehicles will become very difficult and expensive to maintain.

Subsequently, authorised users would not be able to afford the vehicles. This will be a serious blow for any remote communities and would have an impact on more mundane things such as "Nope, we know there was a snow storm that brought all the power down to 30000 people in the Scottish Borders, but we can't even begin repairs until the roads get opened to our vans."

Yes, they may be a problem in cities and on school runs - there are better ways of sorting out these problems than a ban.

Nope, no more than the anti-smokers think of the impact of reduced tax income.

According to ASH figures, the goverments income from tax on cigs is more than they pay out for the NHS. Lets say your average smoker pays £5 a day for cigs thats about £4 tax. Lets say the number of smokers is roughly equal to the number of workers who pay income tax (housewives who smoke, unemployed, low wages, black economy workers etc). That works out that everybody who pays income tax will have to pay around £120 a month extra to support the NHS. Zelots dont think, they just shout until somebody listens.

they forget to mention that all 4x4s sold are compliant with the emission regulations at the time set by the goverment.

if people in smaller cars are 21 times more likely to get killed then their cars are unsafe.  they should consider driving a 4x4 as it is statisically it is obvioulsy safer.

my defender does 30mpg - my company mondeo I had at the time my defender was built was a 2 litre petrol that did 27mpg

my defender is shorter, perhaps slightly wider and higher , but that doesnt add to congestion it improves it surely.

Agree with Dave - I drive a 1988 Landy and a 2003 Volvo V70 T5.

The Landy is shorter than the Volvo and does more MPG. It also fits into parking spaces without overhanging and can do a U turn round a mini roundabout in one go (the Volvo needs a shunt back halfway round - scares other drivers  :lol: ).

Whilst the Volvo is superbly built I doubt very much that it will still be going with IT'S 16 years old, or for that matter continue for many years after that.

If I should run you over with either it's going to hurt. Mind you, if you are a Rambler then this may involve the use of reverse gear one or more times as may be appropriate  

I heard the interview with the anti guy on Radio 2 today - strange how he doesn't drive or own a car isn't it. Bet the b*gger owns a bobble hat though

Our Rnagie certainly does, but then it stops damn fast too.  Anyone pulling out in front of something that size deserved to be removed from the genetic pool.

As for motorbikes I can only sympathise, most car drivers like to feel cocooned in their cars, something the industry is pandering to, and this detaches drivers from the consequence of their actions.

What about banning all white van drivers, they have not regard for the public highway at all, or padestrians, they do 90Mph on the motorway and around town.........Not saying they are all bad but 99.999% of them are.
They are bigger than landrovers and general 4x4's..............
Then there are busses.............I have heard more people are killed buy being run over by a bus than a 4x4 as it always makes the news :?:  :?:
