The vast majority of the work the damper does is in the up and down plane, not side to side and any loads at an angle are usually limited to the extreme ends of the articulation so as long as the play is not along the length of the shock it should be fine. But, as with all things, its not designed to have any 'twist' type play even though it wont affect things too much, so if it's not designed to have any, best to get rid. Just put it on you list under the squealing brakes and 'P' gasket leak, but above interior lights not working.......
