Voltage
« on: October 26, 2007, 14:22:20 »
Hey

The alternator in my 90 is kicking out 14.1 volts. thats going to 2 batteries connected via a voltage sensitive relay.

Does that seem to low?

When the engine is running they normally show between 13.7 and 14.1, depending on the charge state.

With the engine off, the voltage on them both starts to drop, and rests at about 12.2.

Now, the only thing that is on (i think ) is the immobiliser which flashes on the dash.

If i leave it for 2 weeks, it wont start. The voltage read 11.4 the other day after it had stood unused.

Does all that seem reasonable?

Sounds a bit right, if not a mite high. 13.8V is considered about right but your milage may vary.

Battery may be pooched or you have a 'draw' somewhere (Radio, Alarm, CB...)
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Alternator needs to be somewhere between 13.8 - 14.2v to charge  nominal 12v lead acid battery, so you're alternator seems ok. They should read about 12v when not being charged.

As evilgoat says you've either got a drain somewhere or the batteries are past their best. Try leaving them both disconnected for a week or 2 and see if you get the same problem

The batteries are less than a year old, but were replaced by a garage when i bought it - so i have no paper work

Most batteries come with a warranty dont they?

Most have 1 months min sometimes 4 year. Do you leave it stood a lot? As they don't like that.

I try and use it at least once a week... But it only does a 30mile run to work and back then.

It gets some use off road at weekend, but only when i can afford it!

14.3 volts springs to mind as the maximum voltage to charge a lead-acid battery so TBH your alternator sounds fine.

What you need to check is how mucg leakage you have with the ignition off, but many aftermarket alarms are pants at battery drainage

I would get the batteries drop tested. It seems to be charging a wee bit on the high side possibly cause one of yer batteries is dodgy.....
