Chequer Plating

Hello everyone, just a quick question,

who has chequer plated their trucks, mainly the bonnet as I'll be doing it tonight.

What I will be doing is plating the lower sides of the car, the bonnet and the rear door car.

I will also be 'sinking' a spare wheel into the bonnet of the car through the chequer plate. I have a spare bonnet in the same colour and I have already cut the hole out, I just need to make a holder for the wheel now, along with some gas supports to help open and close the bonnet.

Did people have any problems with the curvature of the bonnet?

from all the ads I've seen there is always a bulge in front of the windscreen that you can only see from inside the car....

I've sussed it, make your own and on the under side run the grinder vertically creating channels, not deep but enough to remove the bend, then pop rivet from the centre top and bottom out to each side, hey presto done

I'll stick pics up after the weekend, I'm still making the side plates and a corner scrape plate, I also want to do my window tints and board my roof rack out, but that'll probably be next weekend.

av a look at my wife's (TIC-TAC) chequered plate a bit of a pain to do  but worth it she will be disappointed now she ent the only one with it now .   only advice with the bonnet start in the middle and work alternative side top and bottom so to keep flat and even NO bulge, take ya time and check your progress regally best of luck.

I have a small lift at the front of the bonnet chequer plating but I fixed it with another pop rivet  8-[

hmmm well that isnt actually that bad! its the shiny stuff i dont like, but i still wouldnt do it to mine!

I like the large wooden ariel mounted in the centre of the roofrack in the bottom picture!!

I think chequerplate does have to be black to look good on a Disco - I might well do the lower bodyside on mine when it gets tattier as it will look a lot better than bubbling or missing paint. A quick rub down and coat of primer first to stop further corrosion, then fix the plating on.

Haha, I was thinking of using it as a mast for a few extra mpg's. but the wigwam idea sounds better

I was allmost put off having the stuff by the ads for the kits :roll:



can you tell the difference ???  I can yours all line up.....

I was an upholsterer for 18 years and if somthing dosen't line up it looks wrong and I'm happy to say that yours looks sooooo much better than the one in the ad. (just to point out that the ad photo is being used to sell kits on the interweb and I wont be buying one) it just looks wrong all three of the pieces are from different strips [-X [-X

Lee I can only say that was more by luck than planing, I just used the straight edge for the top section so it was a nice finish, it seems to have worked out ok though  :twisted:

This is my top console mark 1, I'll be trimming the top and adding a thick rubber door seal to contour to the roof and finish it off. I just needed somewhere less likely to get soaked as I'm planning major wading in the distant future, last time it came over the bonnet the cb got soaked when the water came up to the gearstick  :D







I know there is a gap at the top but I'll trim the panel down and edge it with thick black door seal rubber to contour to the roof.

And yes I'm having a push button start :)

I have the benefit of long legs! So I'm quite far away it, and yes I have smashed my head on the Bl**dy thing.

And let me tell you it does hurt.

I have thought of adding a soft 'bump' strip as edging on the leading edge.

I have been considering chequer plating, I think just like the make up ads for lip stick on't telly, choose a colour that suits your paint colour, black does look good on darker paints, and shiny would be good on lighter paints.

I suddenly have this vision of Disco owners dancing round their hand bags...ooeer missus!
