grease nipple
« on: June 30, 2010, 15:10:43 »
hi all..... a quick engineering / land rover question.

i am having major problems greasing up the uj's on my disco's props. so i was thinking about fitting the longer type of grease nipples..... i have standards at the moment.

can anyone tell me what the correct size is for the longer ones?
cheers

I thought about fitting longer nipples to my joints, however, they are more vunerable to getting bent or broken off.
I have ground down my grease gun on two sides to allow it to fit between the yokes which menas that you dont need to change the nipples to grease it up

i did that to my regular sized level greased gun - then I found a small vintage grease gun at a boot sell which fitted perfectly and holds enough grease to do both props. Easier to use (one handed) when under truck, just shove it on nipple and ramp it forward and it springs back.

I just use a standard grease gun and a bod to move car back and forth to maximise the opening?

The one i did it to is an axminster air powered grease gun, one-handed and it can put the grease in at 5000psi........ enough to do even the hardest ujs

I have been meaning to ask about grease guns for some time now. how do you fill them up and use them properly whats that lever at the back you pull out for?

i have 3 difrent types of gun and i just take pot luck until some comes out lol

also if your uj wont fill up with grease and it just comes out round the niple is the uj fubard ??

Well, to fill them up.......... pull back on the lever at the bottom of the gun as far as it will go, may be stiff.
Unscrew the top end where the lever and the pipe are on most guns.
If you are lucky it will be clean and you can either repack with nomal lithium ion grease from a bulk tub or do what i do and buy 400g cartridges that fit straight in once the caps are removed......no mess at all.
If filling up with bulg grease it takes a fair time and you must try and get as much air out as possible by pushing the grease down into the tube or you wont get the full volume in there.
Once it is full, screw the top back on and makre sure it is tight, then, release the handle at the bottom, normally a little tab next to it that needs depressing, sometimes needs the handle pulling at the same time to remove some of the tension from the spring on the catch.
Once that is done, pump the handle and bobs your mothers brother.

If your uj is not filling with grease and it is just coming from round the nipple, it will be that the grease gun is not on the nipple properly, they need to be square to the nipple and fully home for them to work or the grease just squirts donw the gaps........ this is where the modified heads help as they are easier to fit onto the nipples in the confined space in the ujs.

Hope that helps,
 Matt

There's a few 'how to' videos on YouTube for filling grease guns but it's pretty much as Matt describes. When you pull the plunger out on the bottom of the gun you normally pull it to one side to lock it in place then the tab releases it once it's all back together.

There's a air bleed valve on some so you can prime it. Loosen the valve and pump the to let air out, keep going until grease comes out of valve then tighten.  I once had a load of 5 litre cans of NATO grease (company threw them away under COSHH rules becuase they where out of date   )  and they where great for loading the grease gun because I could push the gun cylinder into the can while at same time pulling back on the sprung level so the gun was totally full with no air.

The bled nipple sprung ballbearing valve can get seized with rust or blocked with grime so need a pin or steel brush hair to clean the orifice and make sure ball moves with a good poking. I sometime remove the nipple to clean it up and then test pump grease through it to make sure it's going to work. Just replace the nipple if it's knackered. I tend to reuse good nipples in replacement UJ and then keep the new ones that came with UJ as replacement spares.
